Honeywell HFD-120-Q Tower Quiet Air Purifier with Permanent IFD Filter

If you are in the market for an air purifier, one of the products worth mentioning due to its popularity is the Honeywell HFD-120-Q. Coming with permanent filtration, it is perfect for people who enjoy the idea of not having to buy replacement filters in the future. Here is a brief rundown of the pros and cons of the tower air purifier.

The HFD-120-Q is designed to minimize indoor air pollutants such as dust, pollen, and pet dander. It has a CADR rating of 110 for tobacco smoke. For dust, the CADR rating is 132. Rating for pollen is 132. The suggested room size is 17’x10′ (170 sq ft), perfect for a standard bedroom. It claims to effectively circulate the air in a medium-sized room (170 sq ft) up to 5 times an hour. For small rooms up to 80 sq ft, it can cycle a maximum of 10 air exchanges per hour.

The tower air purifier plugs into a standard 110V wall outlet to operate. Being ENERGY STAR certified, this device is what you would consider economical to operate. This is a good thing if you are planning to keep it running every day 24/7. Based on customer reviews, it eats just 43 Watts on the highest setting. For a comparison, the Honeywell 16200, a desktop compact air cleaner, uses 44 Watts on high.

When it comes to filtration system, it offers three cleaning levels. The 3-step filtration system results in 99% effectiveness to 2 microns. This does not come with True HEPA filtration. Filters that meet the HEPA standard remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 micrometers in diameter. They are ideal for asthma and allergy sufferers. However, the filters must be replaced regularly to maintain effectiveness.

This air cleaner features permanent filtration. The ifD (Intense Filed Dielectric) filters are washable. The same also applies for the foam pre-filter which is designed to trap larger particles like hair, pet fur, lint and dust. The HFD-120-Q is equipped with ionizer to ground airborne particles for easy vacuum cleanup. The ionizer cannot be deactivated.

Located on the top are a number of controls. There are three buttons for speeds. This particular model also has a nice oscillation function so it does not just blow air in one area. A button is provided to deactivate this function. The unit also has an indicator light which is supposed to tell you when the filter needs cleaning.

The Honeywell HFD-120-Q Tower Air Purifier has been reviewed by a lot of its customers at Amazon.com. You can see that it has gotten so many positive reviews. With an average rating of 4.2 out of 5.0 (at this time of writing), it is clear what users think of this product.

Not everything about the HFD-120-Q is positive however. A number of criticisms have also been leveled at the AHAM Certified air purifier, which we will now discuss.

Before anything else, the tower air cleaner has no a built-in UV lamp and a slot for activated carbon filters. If you need a unit that provides these features, the GermGuardian AC4825 is one to consider. Furthermore, the HFD-120-Q lacks a timer and remote control.

Further complaints have been made about the oscillation feature. Some reviewers have reported that the unit started making annoying clicking noise after several months of use. Not a lot of reviewers have reported this issue however.

Despite the criticisms that have been leveled at this product, most of the reviewers have been satisfied with their purchase. Many people have found that the air purifier really does the job as far as taking dust out of the air. Other positive comments have also been made for its ability to get rid of cigar smoke. The HFD-120-Q does not come with odor reducing pre-filter. That being said, customer feedback suggests that it provides some relief.

When it comes to noise nevel, many reviewers have reported it is quiet on low setting, non-intrusive for sleeping. Obviously louder at higher speeds, but not offensive. Other positive comments have been made for how easy it is to clean the filters. No tools are required to access the filters.

The air purifier should not be positioned against the wall. It is required to place it 3 feet away from anything. However, this is not a deal breaker for the majority of reviewers. Many of them have been impressed with the tall ,slim design of this model (about 28 inches tall).

If you are only looking for something that can pick up microscopic health hazards such as bacteria and mold spores, then you might want to consider investing in an alternative product featured on this website. But if all you need is a unit that helps capture airborne particles such as smoke, dust, pollen, and pet dander from the air, the the ifD air purifier is worth considering.
